What is your favorite quote?
I always try to keep at least one famous quote at hand. It is kind of satisfying when the opportunity to say something smart comes and you are prepared. Even if it is a borrowed wisdom.
For a while, I have been keeping this quote in mind. Some of you might say it comes from Dr. Seuss, but it does not.
The quote is from Mr. Bernard M. Baruch. He was an American financier who amassed a fortune on the New York Stock Exchange. He impressed President Woodrow Wilson by managing the nation’s economic mobilization in World War I as chairman of the War Industries Board. Also, he advised Wilson during the Paris Peace Conference. He made another fortune in the postwar bull market but foresaw the Wall Street crash and sold out well in advance.
I must admit I don’t feel comfortable quoting a guy who made a huge fortune gambling on the stock market during those years. He obviously had a lot of insider info. I wish this quote were from Dr. Seuss.
” Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.“
Now that I am really paying attention to the phrase, I realize it might sound powerful and wise, but it doesn’t make much sense. Try being who you are and saying what you want to your boss, and let’s see how that works for you. Whether you like it or not, your boss does matter in your life, and chances are he (or she) will mind what you have to say.

The Classic Machines 
Well, yes and no. Your boss matters only in the very very short term. Most of us need a paycheck. But there are other jobs and other bosses out there. I’ve had many bosses and to be honest none of them “matter” now.
But your family, your true friends, THEY matter and will matter for all of your life.
And for those of us who read your blog even our cars matter way more than our bosses. My W/S champion, track record holder, 1970 Slant Six Plymouth Duster – really the memories associated with it – is pretty high on my “matters” list.
I also don’t want to venerate rich stock market players, but I do like this saying.

You are absolutely right. Bosses come and go, and after a while, we won’t even remember them. True friends won’t mind what you have to say if it comes from your heart.

That particula Seuss quote made an immediate impact on me. It’s so true! We need to live in the moment and thoroughly revel in it. 😁
